Budowa zosta\u0142a zako\u0144czona w 1974 roku i w dniu 18 grudnia 1974 roku przeprowadzono do\u015bwiadczenie krytyczne reaktora. Eksploatacj\u0119 rozpocz\u0119to w 1975 r.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Reaktor ten zosta\u0142 zaprojektowany przez polskich specjalist\u00f3w i technik\u00f3w. Zosta\u0142 skonstruowany jako reaktor wielozadaniowy o wysokim strumieniu neutron\u00f3w &#8211; jako uzupe\u0142nienie mo\u017cliwo\u015bci badawczych reaktora EWA. Reaktor ten budowano r\u00f3wnie\u017c z my\u015bl\u0105 o prowadzeniu na nim bada\u0144 materia\u0142owych niezb\u0119dnych w programach budowy i eksploatacji elektrowni j\u0105drowych.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Reaktor by\u0142 eksploatowany do po\u0142owy 1985 roku, kiedy to zosta\u0142 poddany gruntownej modernizacji. Zainstalowano pasywny uk\u0142ad zalewania kana\u0142\u00f3w paliwowych wod\u0105 basenow\u0105 w przypadku spadku ci\u015bnienia w obiegu ch\u0142odzenia element\u00f3w paliwowych, zamontowano nowe konstrukcje poziomych kana\u0142\u00f3w wyprowadzaj\u0105cych wi\u0105zki neutron\u00f3w z reaktora.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Reaktor zosta\u0142 ponownie uruchomiony w grudniu 1992 roku i od 1993 roku po przej\u015bciu przez procedur\u0119 rozruchu energetycznego reaktor MARIA podj\u0105\u0142 normaln\u0105 eksploatacj\u0119. W chwili obecnej jest prowadzona normalna eksploatacja reaktora MARIA. Wg wst\u0119pnych technicznych analiz reaktor MARIA mo\u017ce by\u0107 eksploatowany do 2020 roku, a po modernizacji do 2050 &#8211; 2060 roku.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Reaktor MARIA jest obecnie jednym z najlepszych reaktor\u00f3w w Europie. Wysoki strumie\u0144 neutron\u00f3w w rdzeniu, mo\u017cliwo\u015b\u0107 dostosowania konfiguracji rdzenia do wymog\u00f3w u\u017cytkownik\u00f3w, stosunkowo &#8222;m\u0142ody wiek&#8221; urz\u0105dzenia oraz lokalizacja z dala od du\u017cych aglomeracji ludzkich &#8211; s\u0105 argumentami przemawiaj\u0105cymi za efektywn\u0105 i co najmniej dwudziestoletnia dalsz\u0105 eksploatacj\u0105 tego reaktora. Ze wzgl\u0119du na niekorzystn\u0105 lokalizacj\u0119 (blisko\u015b\u0107 du\u017cych skupisk ludno\u015bci) jak i fizyczne zestarzenie si\u0119 urz\u0105dze\u0144 liczne reaktory badawcze w Europie
